ABOUT 30 former United Kingdom-trained teachers are meeting for their fifth reunion lunch in Blacktown on August 18.
The residents of NSW, WA, the ACT and Malaysia will be at the Seven Hills/Toongabbie RSL Club between 12pm and 3 pm.
They are from the Malayan Teachers' College Kirkby and the Malayan Teachers' College Brinsford Lodge.
Spokesman Robert Tay of Blacktown said prior to Malaysia's Independence, the Government of the then Malaya established its first two teacher training colleges in the U.K.
He said it was to deal with the acute shortage of trained teachers after the Second World War.
`` It was also to reduce illiteracy and to develop educated and enlightened Malayan citizens for the future,'' he said.
The Kirkby College, near Liverpool, operated between 1951 and 1962 and trained primary school teachers and teacher trainers.
Over the 12-year period, it trained 1,900 students for the basic teachers course and 400 trained teachers for the teacher-trainers program.
Brinsford Lodge, near Wolverhampton, Birmingham, opened its doors from 1955 to 1965, trained 1,200 students for secondary schools.
``During the period of their operation, each of these two colleges received 150 students a year who were nationally selected.
`` On completion of their training these newly qualified teachers, bonded for five years by the Government, returned to their home country to staff the public school system.''
He said most of these teachers resigned on completion of their bond and went on to attain success in the legal profession, politics, tertiary institutions, accounting and positions in corporations.
One former Kirkby-trained teacher even ascended to the position of Queen to the Paramount Ruler of Malaysia.
Others have emigrated to overseas, like the U.S., the U.K., Canada, New Zealand and Australia with about 50 residing in the ACT and NSW alone.
