Resident in Seven Hills have helped two companies to collect more than 10,000 old mattresses for recycling in Sydney.
WSN Environmental Solutions and Dreamsafe Recycling say they dropped off 1600 mattresses at Seven Hills Waste and Recycling Centre since the start of the service early this year.
WSN CEO Ken Kanofski said Seven Hills residents' enthusiasm for recycling had boosted resource recovery and divert waste from landfill.
``By recycling mattresses, we can recover resources like coil springs that can be melted down and on-sold to manufacturers, wood to make biofuels and foam to make carpet underlay,'' Mr Kanofski said.
``Recycling 10,000 of these mattresses also means that we are saving thousands of cubic metres of airspace in landfill.
Under the program, Dreamsafe Recycling collects old and unwanted mattresses from WSN's sites and extracts metal, wood and foam, while mattresses that are still in good condition are restored and sold for re-use by hostels and motels.
Mr Kanofski said the program is helping residents take another small but important step in the fight against climate change.
``Seven Hills residents are becoming increasingly conscious of their environmental footprint and want ensure that nothing is wasted when they dispose of unwanted household goods.''
Residents can drop off their unwanted mattresses at WSN's Seven Hills Waste and Recycling Centre for $20 per mattress.
