 Butcher fights giants

Butcher fights giants

02 Mar, 2010 08:40 AM
QUAKERS Hill butcher Gary Wolffe is fighting hard to maintain his share of the local meat market.

The owner/manager of Quakers Hill Country Fresh Meats in Farnham Road says he has been forced to go above and beyond the traditional work of a butcher as a means of taking on the supermarket giants.

Mr Wolffe's store now offers free home delivery and is one of the few butchers who cooks meat and roasts for his customers to collect on their way home from work.

He also offers spit roast hire that comes with salads and rolls on weekends and public holidays.

Mr Wolffe said his company was the first in Blacktown to introduce these extra services to try to entice customers away from the chain supermarkets.

He said he introduced his fightback plan about two weeks ago, after Woolworths and Coles announced the lowering of their prices of selected goods.

His wife Jo said she was in the process of creating a website for the business to attract younger computer literate customers.

Mrs Wolffe said competition was fierce and that both Coles and Woolworths had stores at Marayong, Glenwood, Kings Langley, Stanhope Gardens, Rouse Hill and a proposed store at Schofields.

She considers both as direct competition.

Mr Wolffe opened his store about 17 months ago.

He gets his meat supplies from Junee and Ulladulla.

``Overall, our meats are cheaper than Woolies and Coles,'' Mr Wolffe said. ``Only their specials are cheaper than ours because we can't compromise our quality to compete.''

Good to see the Sun getting behind local businesses like Gary's butcher shop, well done. We as consumers are paying the price for our lack of competition in the grocery market. I believe our food prices are the most expensive among the developed countries. 40% increase in the last 2 years. So once again well done Sun Newspaper and lets see more human interest stories when it comes to local small business and the faces behind them as they are all just having ago.

Thank you to the Blacktown Sun for publishing this article. It is important to promote the small businesses in the local area and to encourage people to look outside of the large chain supermarkets.
