Rugby league club the Quakers Hill Destroyers will move into its $2.7 million new home next week and will celebrate with pomp and ceremony.
As Quakers Hill and surrounding suburbs, including Parklea, Glenwood and Acacia Gardens boomed in recent years, the club out-grew its home ground at Nicholas Reserve.
Sponsorship coordinator Jaquie Wallace said the club had about 350 players registered last year, from under 6s right through to masters. So many teams that they often had to find away grounds to host their home games.
‘‘We had to say to the Penrith league that we could only run so many games, now we can run a full program,’’ she said.
The new grounds and facilities have been years in the making. Phil Gould and Riverstone MP Kevin Conolly will be at the grand opening of the grounds, as will Aboriginal elders who will bless it with a traditional smoke ceremony.
The club will also be taking registrations at the opening this Sunday, at Waites Reserve, Tamarind Drive, Acacia Gardens, from 10am.
