Glendenning food business caught in $25m heroin and ice bust

10 Feb, 2012 10:32 AM
POLICE say they have uncovered a sophisticated Sydney drug operation, seizing ice and heroin worth more than $25 million and $300,000 in cash.

Investigators raided a storage unit at Artarmon earlier this week and, pending drug analysis, said they found 14 kilograms of ice, 11.5 kilograms of 'black tar' heroin and two kilograms of brown heroin hidden inside fruit juice boxes.

Th ey arrested a 43-year-old Australian-Iran dual citizen after he went to the storage unit about 12.30pm yesterday, and then searched other units, some houses, financial institutions and a food importation business at Glendenning - finding 7.5 kilograms of ice, 36 kilograms of 'black tar' heroin, 166 grams of brown heroin, $300,000 cash, jewellery and securities.

Investigators said they were also testing another tonne of fruit juice boxes.

"I have no doubt those drugs were destined for the streets of Sydney,'' Organised Crime Director of the NSW Police's State Crime Command, Detective Chief Superintendent Mal Lanyon, said.

"I believe this will have an impact on local drug availability. ... We believe we have uncovered a sophisticated drug importation and distribution operation and we anticipate further arrests will be made.''

The man was charged with two counts of supplying a a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs. He was refused bail to appear in Hornsby Local Court today.

Police appealed for anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
