‘‘R.I.P Hayden Thomas Burnes; you mean the world to me and always will. I would go to you for everything, kisses, hugs, parties, to get drunk, and to just chill with. You made me smile . . . .’’ the heartfelt note written on St Clair skate ramp goes on.
‘‘I love you so much, rest in paradise ma (sic) boy. My brother, best mate, my everything. I miss you, I love you,’’ it concludes.
It is just one of many tributes to murdered teenager Hayden Burnes that have been inked around St Clair skate park.
Colourful and expressive graffiti murals in honour of Hayden, who was a few days short of his 16th birthday, cover the skate park and its surrounds.
Grieving teenagers have gathered at the skate park to light candles and write messages to their friend who was stabbed to death on his way to work in Minchinbury on Monday morning.
To the horror of the teenagers, Penrith Council has said it must clean-off the murals and eulogies. A fence has been erected around the park to keep people from using it.
Penrith mayor Greg Davies said he understood the grief being expressed by the teenagers but the council had to remove the graffiti from the skate park. he said it would be done on Friday.
‘‘It’s a tragedy that someone so young has lost their life,’’ he said, ‘‘our hearts go out to his parents and all of his mates.’’
‘‘(But) we have to remove (the graffiti) because of policy and also safety reasons.
‘‘A lot of people around the area might look at it in three or four months and say, ‘well we don’t want to live next to that’’’.
Councillor Davies said candle wax had melted onto the ramps making it a slip hazard for skaters.
Police have patrolled the skate park but St Marys deputy inspector Daryl Jobson said that was just a safety precaution.
‘‘We don't condone damage to the skate park,’’ he said.
‘‘We would like to encourage the young people to obey the law and carry out their tributes with respect.’’
Leanne Moore, a mother of one of the teens who has been mourning Hayden with the group at the skate park, said some of the murals should be left as a lasting memorial.
‘‘Watching them come together over this is great,’’ she said.
‘‘There is a beautiful mural in there that is just beautiful. They really want to keep that.’’
