Motorsport Thunder: sprint car 'spectacular'

09 Feb, 2012 07:36 AM
Well it’s Thursday again and I am sorry to sound like a broken record but rain has once again affected Motorsport in western Sydney.

And with some important events coming up this weekend in both Speedway and Drag Racing the lousy weather looks to once again be in control of the weekend’s activities.

The big event this weekend at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway is the Australian Wingless Sprintcar Championship which will be held over two nights, Friday, February 10, and Saturday, February 11. With more than 80 cars already entered, ''spectacular'' is the only way this show can be described.

For those readers who are not familiar with a wingless sprintcar they are just like their name implies: the chassis, wheels and tyres and suspension are just the same as their winged big brothers. However, the wingless cars have two main differences; obviously as the name implies they race without wings and they also run a Commodore V6 engine, which is strictly controlled with rules from the sanctioning body so as to keep the racing close and exciting.

The wingless sprintcars have only been around for around four years but in that time have grown to be one of the largest classes in all of speedway and with a uniform set of rules Australia wide this class just continues to grow, and so does the fan base and for good reason.

Western Sydney is well represented with favourites like Gary Brazier, Troy Little, Bruce White and Martin Lawes just a few of the racers who call western Sydney their homes. These guys will certainly have the crowd cheering them on over the two nights of this Australian Title event.

Spectator gates will open from 3pm and racing will start around 5.30pm both nights, for further information log on to www.sydneyspeedway.com.au

Meanwhile just up the M4, Sydney Dragway is holding another one of its very popular Saturday afternoon Test N Tunes where racers can come out and practice with their cars getting them up to speed for the upcoming ANDRA Pro Series and Rocket Allstars Racing Series national championship round in March.

These Test N Tunes are vitally important to the racer because the fine tuning of the race car is critical to the consistency and therefore the opportunity to win which is, let’s face it, why we all compete in the first place.

In drag racing you can lose by one one thousandth of a second which is actually quicker than you or I can blink so getting the car and driver tuned in as one is vitally important to the overall success of the day. The racers are also able to try different tune up ideas; tyre pressure is something that can be experimented with to make the car leave the start line quicker and just a quarter of one pound can make all the difference at the end of the day. For more information on the events at Sydney Dragway go to www.sydneydragway.com.au

See you guys next weekend, and if you get the chance get out and enjoy some Motorsport Thunder.

As you can see here the main difference with these cars is the missing huge top wing. Photo: Jo Richards.
