JEAN and Bob Furlong’s son was murdered 10 years ago by a man who he had never met.
A decade on, with Michael Furlong’s killer in a psychiatric ward, the Blacktown couple are still fighting for what they believe to be justice.
The Furlongs are campaigning to have laws that allow criminals to change their names by deed poll changed.
Mrs Furlong said she was not told by anyone that her son’s killer Michael Sorell had changed his surname to Striker while inside a mental institution.
‘‘I didn’t know he changed his name until it was too late,’’ Mrs Furlong said.
While Sorell, aka Striker, would still carry a criminal record attached to his new name, Mrs Furlong believed he would no longer carry the stigma associated with the dozens of news reports about his crime.
‘’’We want this law changed because there’s no record now of what he has done; that doesn’t seem right does it?,’’ she asked.
Mr Furlong’s murderer Michael Sorell had spent time in psychiatric wards in the UK and Queensland before moving to Sydney.
Suffering from paranoid schizophrenic delusions, Sorell — aka Striker — stood behind Mr Furlong and slit his throat in a random attack on the roadside in Smithfield.
‘‘I hope he is never be let out,’’ Mrs Furlong said.
The state government has proposed laws that would require prisoners and parolees to have permission from authorities to change their names. There would be no requirement for victims to be told of the name change.
