A 18-year-old youth has beaten 12 others to win a place in a national street style football contest in Blacktown.
Gramos Baski came first, David McMurray, second, and Ian McKinnon, third in the action-packed competition at Blacktown Football Club last Tuesday.
He won a spot at the Australian National Final to be held at the Bondi Icebergs Club on July 18.
The winner of the National Final can claim the title of the Australian Freestyle Football Champion and go on to represent Australia and compete against the world's best in the Red Bull Street Style World Final in April 2010.
Gramos Baski who plays for Hurlstone Park Football Club has been practising freestyle football since he was 15-year-old.
He said as his football career flourished he found himself having to focus more on the game than freestyle.
A spokeswoman said this new style of football broke new ground in the sporting industry in Australia as it combined music, control, style and creativity in one game.
``The rules are simple; one ball, two players, three minutes and no hands,'' she said.
`` In a head-to-head battle, each athlete competing will have only 20 seconds to showcase their freestyle football skills before passing the ball on to their opponent.
``Each competitor must also try and co-ordinate their footwork skills in time with the beat of the music to score points for creativity and style.''
If you live in Sydney's west and missed out on this qualifier, there is the second Western Sydney qualifier at Penrith FC, Jamison Park (next to canteen) York Road, South Penrith on July 14.
Registrations begin at 6pm and the qualifier will commence at 6.30pm.
