 Play it again, men

Play it again, men

30 Jun, 2009 09:45 AM
SOMETIMES the members of a struggling football team collectively get out of the right side of the bed on match day.

What follows is a committed collective performance. Parramatta all got out of the right side of the bed when they beat the Knights in Newcastle three rounds ago.

They did again against the Brisbane Broncos at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday.

In between, they didn't when they hosted the Wests Tigers on a Monday night.

That lack of consistency is why they're a struggling team.

The 21-14 win against the Broncos, secured in the last five minutes, shouldn't have been a struggle.

Parramatta were dominant enough to have the game won at half-time.

The Eels made enough clean breaks in the second half to have the game won well before the last five minutes.

It could be termed fear of winning or expressed another way little acquaintance with winning.

Parramatta haven't won consecutive matches this season. That's now the challenge when they play Penrith in the local derby at CUA Stadium on Sunday.

Penrith will have Petero Civoniceva back leading from the front and certainly Michael Jennings in the centres.

Luke Lewis is also a chance.

This will be Parramatta's chance to gain momentum. If they don't collectively get out of the right side of the bed together, the Broncos win will count for little.

It won't count for nothing, however.

Coach Daniel Anderson giving permission to ad lib, and its successful result, should have done wonders for confidence.

Players looked like they enjoyed playing again and there were advances.

Tim Mannah is growing into his role as an NRL starting prop, allowed to run free. Nathan Hindmarsh was popping passes like Arthur Beetson or Bob O'Reilly and had great fun.

Daniel Mortimer, at five-eighth, is still at least 18 months from assuming the halfback role that's his, he's still a learner but in his winning try showed a dummy, step, pace and youthful self-belief.

It's a try Brisbane's Peter Wallace could never have scored, even if fit, because Wallace is a traditional five-eighth forced to play half and lacking those skills.

Eels' centre Krisnan Inu was the gifted match-winner again: his intercept try, greater involvement, monster shoulder charge of the monstrously sized Dave Taylor and crucial holding-up of Bronco replacement Josh McGuire were all telling moments.

At times it seemed Sterling, Kenny, Cronin, Ella and Grothe were playing again, except it was Reddy and Grothe jnr with assistance.

Tellingly, all Parramatta's tries came from ad-lib play; two of Brisbane's from set-piece backline sweeps.

There's a lesson there for Parramatta in attack and defence.

All good but the best of the lot was Broncos' captain Darren Lockyer, backing up from State of Origin.

Brisbane's hopes rise and fall on Lockyer's availability.

He willed himself to make crucial tackles, often consecutive.

Lockyer twice cut down Jarryd Hayne after the Eels fullback had made long breaks and seemed certain to score.

What a player.

Parramatta can do some homework on their defensive alignment.

Jarryd Hayne can do some work on not letting the high ball bounce.

Fuifui Moimoi? Homework wouldn't help.

He's just Fuifui, a force of nature.
