IN-LINE speed-skating would be skating on thin ice if it wasn't for the Blacktown City Sports Awards.
The annual awards have given Quakers Hill skater Daniel Thomson a rare opportunity to lift the profile of his little-known sport.
Thomson, 31, is one of 12 local sports stars vying for the top gong and a $3000 prize at Mt Druitt Workers on February 27.
For Thomson, 2009 was a busy year. He won relay silver and individual bronze medals at the Oceania championships in Brisbane and won the state open road title for an eighth time.
``I always look forward to the awards as it's a chance to give in-line speed-skating better exposure in the area,'' Thomson said.
Thomson was introduced to the sport at a friend's birthday party when he was nine and hasn't look back.
He is busy preparing for the Oceania titles in New Zealand in April, where he hopes to win his first individual gold medal.
It comes after a disappointing performance at the national titles last year due to illness.
Thomson also hopes to take part in overseas competitions later this year.
More than 50 athletes across a variety of sports will be represented at the awards in seven categories.
Rugby league legend Peter Sterling will be the guest speaker.
Limited tickets are available to the public.
Cost is $35 an adult and $15 a child, which includes a three-course meal.
