IT was mate versus mate when Australia's best softballers came to town for the first round of the 2009/10 Gilleys Shield.
The NSW Firestars did their national title hopes no harm, winning four from six games at Blacktown Olympic Park.
This included a 7-0 thrashing of defending premiers, the Queensland Heat.
The teams now share second behind the unbeaten WA Flames.
The New Zealand White Sox made a promising shield debut, winning two matches.
Western Sydney are well represented in the Firestars through Karina Cannon, Kelly Gentle, Ashlee Pobjie and Stacey Porter.
Sutherland's Kyira Cox also works in Rooty Hill as a Softball NSW technical officer.
``Our hopes this season are to win the title and develop the young players coming through,'' Cox said.
Firestars players are vying for places in the Australian squad for next year's world title in Oklahoma.
The four-yearly tournament is the sport's most important since softball's axing from the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
Australia had won silver or bronze at all four Olympic Games between 1996 and 2008.
The Firestars turn their focus to round three in Melbourne next month.
The fourth and final round will be played in February.
