Parklea Markets will be allowed to open on Fridays after Blacktown Council approved an application for extended hours, last night.
Councillor Tony Bleasdale supported the council’s recommendation for Friday because it would promote economic activity in Blacktown, he said.
‘‘Parklea Markets has become an iconic part of Blacktown,’’ he said.
‘‘It brings to the city a certain amount of action that can only benefit the city in terms of economic activity,’’ he said.
But Cr Alan Pendleton said he opposed the proposal, in the strongest terms.
‘‘I can’t and don’t support this development application,’’ he said.
‘‘This development has a long history; it was sordid in the way it was developed.’’
Cr Pendleton said he believed the owner, Con Constantine, would continue to seek extended trading hours until Thursday and public holiday trading was also allowed.
That, he said, would be to the detriment of other planned retail centres around Blacktown.
