Ice princesses share Olympic dream

SIX young girls with dreams of becoming Olympic figure skaters are competing in Baulkham Hills later this month.

They are Ziah Burns, 7, of Seven Hills, Bianca Douglas, 13, of Baulkham Hills, Taryn Muehlbacher, 12, of North Rocks, Kaitlyn Dye, 13, of Kings Langley, Meeri Lee, 12, of Oakville and Brianna Webster, 8, of Epping.

The six are members of the Norwest Figure Skating Club which organised the competition at Sydney Ice Arena on March 24.

The girls' mothers said they were all enthusiastic about their chosen sport and couldn't wait to get to their practice sessions.

Ziah's mum, Suzette Po-Williams said her daughter and the others hoped to represent their club at state and later national level, then eventually compete in the Olympics.

"It is their hope and dream and we, as their mums, will do our best to help them make their dreams come true," she said.

The six responded with a loud "yes" when asked by the Sun if that was what they wanted.

Norwest Figure Skating Club has thrown open the competition to the members of seven clubs in the NSW Ice Skating Association to find out where its members are placed in state ranking.

Norwest Figure Skating Club has about 40 single members and 10 family members between the ages of six to 50, including some who already competed at the state championships last year.

Club convener Donna Novak is confident, given time, that some of them would take part in international championships.

She said the coming competition was open to members of registered ice skating clubs at all levels to lift the standard in the region.

"All participants will receive a certificate and a medal and each divisional first, second and third winners will get a trophy," she said.

"Please come and enjoy watching the competitors of varying levels of excellence, their amazing costumes and the excitement of this beautiful and graceful sport."

The club is also looking for new members and sponsors in the hope of becoming the best rink in Sydney and continue to hold competition and development programs for skaters.
