Chance to reward an outstanding police officer

RESIDENTS in Blacktown can now nominate police officers who excelled in their duties to the community for the Police Officer of the Year Awards.

Nomination forms are available from Westpoint’s Customer Desk and online at westpoint.com.au, or blacktownsun.com.au or phone 88252400.

The forms must be returned by Wednesday, March 27 and the presentation to the winners will be held at Blacktown Workers Club on April 30.

Blacktown commander Superintendent Mark Wright said the awards provided an opportunity for residents to recognise officers who excelled in the performance of their duties.

‘‘Policing is often a thankless task and it’s through awards like this that the community can remind police officers that they appreciate their work and support them,’’ he said.

Blacktown Rotary Club president Mel Gray said they introduced the awards to the area in 1998.

‘‘The current award for service in 2012 will be the 15th presented by the Rotary Club,’’ he said.

‘‘The Police Officer of the Year Award acknowledges outstanding acts of courage, compassion, understanding or devotion to duty provided to the community during 2012 by officers in the Blacktown local area command.’’

The awards are sponsored by Westpoint Blacktown and supported by Blacktown Council, the Blacktown Sun and Blacktown Workers Club.
