Blacktown Spartans shocked defending premiers Marconi Stallions 2-1 in the opening round of the IGA NSW National Premier League Men’s 1 soccer at home on Saturday night.
And it was a well-deserved three points.
The Spartans were dominant for most of the game.
Nathan Millgate grabbed the goals in the fourth and 51st minutes before Marconi’s Steven Ilic got one back in the 90th minute to provide a tense finish.
Spartans coach Ben de Haan was modest but pleased.
“It was very tough at the end there but I think it is a measure of how we’ve grown, as I don’t think we would have seen them off in that scenario last season,’’ he said.
“Nathan Millgate is a lad who played his first game here last year and scored our goals tonight, his first in the league, so it shows how our younger players have grown from the last campaign.’’
The Spartans will next campaign away against Bonnyrigg this Saturday.
