Work on Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospitals redevelopment continues

Work at Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals has progressed with contracts awarded for the new mental health unit and an expansion of dental and emergency departments.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner said the contracts had been signed last week as she announced a tender for the construction of the new clinical services building at Blacktown.

Work on the 20-bed sub-acute mental health unit at Blacktown will be done by ADCO Construction Pty Ltd.

Construction of a new entry, emergency facilities, dental and rehabilitation facilities at Mount Druitt Hospital will be done by Kane Constructions.

The expanded and upgraded sterilising services department at the Blacktown medical campus has been finished and will sterilise more than 11,000 instrument trays a month.

Site coordinator Tracey Worthington said the feat should not be underestimated.

“Contaminated items coming from theatres are sorted, disassembled and passed through the high-tech washers in specific cycles to ensure they are clean,’’ she said.

‘‘Our standards were always extremely high but our new low-temperature steriliser means we can now take care of heat sensitive items which previously had to be sent off-site for sterilising.

Ms Worthington said most people, even staff, didn’t realise how complex the process was.
