Blacktown Pony Club will be holding a gymkhana day competition in Schofields to celebrate its 50th anniversary on September 15.
The competition, at Brendan Place, is open to all pony clubs in NSW and will include show ride, jump, sports and cross country events.
The club is also hosting a 50th year reunion dinner open to present and former members at the Blacktown RSL Club on October 26.
Club spokeswoman Sonia Mcwhirter said it hoped to raise about $10,000 to buy new equipment for the club’s 70 members, who are aged 2-24.
‘‘The funds raised will provide children with equipment to train in their sport,’’ she said.
‘‘The club promotes the physical, mental and spiritual development of young people and an awareness of sportsmanship and citizenship, assisting them to gain knowledge and become proficient in their chosen sport.
‘‘ It differs from other youth clubs as the horse is the central interest to cultivate strength of character and self-discipline while enjoying taking part in equestrian sports.
‘‘Blacktown Pony Club caters to people who enjoy all sorts of horse sports including dressage, show jumping, eventing, mounted games, sporting and polo cross.
‘‘We have members who compete at state level.
‘‘Equine education is important and we strive to instil in their minds handling, nutrition, veterinary skills and equipment care.’’
