Airport fight continues

BLACKTOWN councillor Stephen Bali and Chifley MP Ed Husic are opposed to Sydney's second airport being located at Badgerys Creek.

Cr Bali sent a letter to Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss after the minister said the second airport must operate for 24 hours if Sydney was to be a world-class city.

Cr Bali said the proposed Badgerys Creek airport should not be the only option.

He wants the government to identify the size and scope of the proposed airport, as well as the Mascot expansion option.

"An environment impact assessment for each option needs to considered given the many years that has lapsed since previous options were considered and the population and transport pollution and accessibility has substantially deteriorated," he said.

"Badgerys Creek airport would present unique pollution factors that will add to the already adverse general health standards of the general public in western Sydney."

Mr Husic said a 24-hour airport at Badgerys Creek would be the ultimate insult to residents.

"West and south-west Sydney are growing rapidly, so to slap an airport in the middle of where you are wanting young families to live is insulting and pointless."
