The first national event to recognise the services of Filipino-Australian nurses in Australia over the past 30 years is on at Rooty Hill on March 23.
Nominations open from today (January 28) and end February 27.
The awards ceremony will be held at Rooty Hill RSL Tivoli Room, Sherbrooke Street during the bi-annual ADHIKA Gala Dinner.
ADHIKA Inc. is a non-profit association of radio hosts, broadcasters and producers of eight community radio programs – Adhika, Agila, Bandila, Dalisay, Rizal, Sandigan, Tamaraw and The Mob Radio.
It joined forces with the Philippine Health Care Association of Australia Inc./Philippine Nurses Association Australia to hold the event.
Josie Musa, public officer, ADHIKA, said the compassion and outstanding professionalism of Filipino nurses was well known around the world.
‘‘We want to help put the media spotlight on them and celebrate their role in the well-being of the mainstream community through these awards/citations,’’ she said.
Ella Magallanes Martirez, director of the Philippine Nurses Association Australia, said Filipino nurses are among the unsung heroes of our birth country, the Philippines, and adopted country, Australia,’’ she said.
‘‘Not only are they a source of pride for their families in the Philippines but in Australia where they continue to raise the standards in their work are in hospitals, medical centres, clinics, nursing homes and other health institutions.’’
She said there are about 12,000 nurses of Filipino heritage in Australia.
Awards will be adjudicated by a panel of judges from the industry and candidates can either self-nominate or be nominated by their colleague or employer.
This year, ADHIKA will forego the media tribute in favour of the inaugural nursing awards and run a short presentation on the local community news coverage of the Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan disaster.
The event will include a three-course meal, at a cost of $70 each, and entertainment provided by Brian Lorenz, music producer/composer Oliver Gadista, the Visayan & the Mindanao Ethnic Dance Groups.
