The city of Blacktown and its many talents will soon be seen in a movie.
Afro-Australian writer-producer Daniel Okoduwa signed a contract with Hollywood-based Arsenal Pictures last week to distribute his film, Gossip Nation, which was directed by Dural’s Mike Kang.
Mostly filmed in Blacktown, the movie would be distributed in all formats.
In Australia and New Zealand it will be distributed by Titan View Australia.
‘‘I am very excited about this deal as it will put Blacktown on the world map and also expose our many talents to the rest of the world,’’ he said.
‘‘The deal has opened the doors of Hollywood to small filmmakers like me and gives hope to upcoming actors and actresses that their dreams can come true.’’
Mr Okoduwa won the Best Upcoming Film Producer Awards in Australia and New Zealand at the Screen Producers Association of Australia Award (SPAA) in 2012.
His meeting with Arsenal chief executive officer Yarek Danielak and acquisition director Iwona Ash and other film distributors in Los Angeles was sponsored by SPAA last December.
‘‘If I was told a few years ago that I would be sitting in Hollywood, putting pen to paper to sell my film to the world, I would have said such a prophecy is pure fantasy,’’ he said.
‘‘Out of curiosity, I asked Arsenal why they are so interested in Gossip Nation.
‘‘The answer was that it is different, unique, honest and not politically correct, or whatever that means.
‘‘Before I left Los Angeles, they were preparing my film for the Berlin Film Festival.’’
Mr Okoduwa is seeking local financial support to make more films.
‘‘I see Blacktown as the future in the production of films because of its uniqueness,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s very multicultural with lots of energy and has a crucible of cultures and people with millions of stories waiting to be told.’’
