A CareFlight rescue helicopter responding to a call to an accident on the M7 on Friday night broke down before it could take an injured motorcyclist to hospital, blocking the southbound lanes of the motorway.
Transport news website TNV Webcam said the medical helicopter had responded to the call to a motorcyclist trapped under a ute on the motorway, between the Richmond Road and Symonds Road exits, at about 8pm.
After it landed the helicopter experienced a mechanical problem, leaving it stranded in the middle of the southbound lanes with traffic unable to pass.
The motorcyclist, aged in his 30s, was taken to Westmead Hospital by an ambulance for a suspected broken leg and chest injuries and remains in a stable condition.
The pilot managed to power-up the chopper sufficiently to shift it into a centre turning bay before an engineer was called to repair it.
