A cyclist has died after being hit by a car in Mosman taking the state’s road toll to two over the Easter holiday period.
Police said the cyclist collided with a Mercedes on Medusa Street, near Spit Road, at 3.30pm – he died at the scene.
The driver was not injured.
Earlier on Saturday a man was killed after his car collided with a truck on the north coast.
The crash occurred on Tyndale Road at Tyndale, 30 kilometres north of Grafton, at 12.30pm on Saturday.
The car driver was killed instantly and the truck driver and his passenger were taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police had hoped to record a fatality-free long weekend under Operation Tortoise with double demerit point penalties in force for speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences until Monday night.
Officers have suspended several drivers’ licences this weekend, including that of a man from Young who was allegedly driving a stolen ute at speeds of up to 175km/h in a 100km/h zone before he ran it off the road at Forbes.
A 20-year-old P-plate driver also lost his licence and had his car’s number plates confiscated after he was detected allegedly driving at 126km/h in a 60km/h zone along Barrenjoey Road, Newport, about 3.30am on Friday.
Police are, however, encouraged by a drop in the number of drunk drivers detected compared with Easter last year.
On day two of their blitz, officers breath-tested 64,597 drivers. Fifty-eight were charged. On the same day last Easter, they had tested 59,050 and detected 136 drivers over the limit.
“With the high-visibility operation now under way, I am surprised yet again that people risk drink-driving or speeding,” Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said.
“The consequences of being charged can be life-changing for a driver’s personal life, family and career. If it is worse, and someone is hurt, the outcome can be tragic. We urge drivers to think about how their behaviour may impact on another person or family.”
Double demerit-point penalties for speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences came into effect at midnight Thursday and continue until midnight Monday as part of Operation Tortoise.
They will also be applied for the Anzac Day long weekend.
