WHAT began as an after-school job for Tory Luckel has turned into a career.
Mr Luckel started working at McDonald's at Doonside when he was 15 to earn some money while attending Coverdale Christian School at Riverstone.
Mr Luckel is now the store manager at McDonald's Blacktown Mega Centre and has been with McDonald's for 17 years, working his way up through the ranks.
He said he had always enjoyed his job. "The work is always changing, so there's always new challenges and new people coming in," Mr Luckel said.
He said the managerial team at McDonald's Blacktown Mega Centre believed the way their staff were trained contributed to the quality of service provided at the store.
"We train our staff to be genuine with customers, especially our day crew who interact with our regular customers and end up building up a rapport with them," Mr Luckel said.
There are 10 managers at the Blacktown Mega Centre store and Mr Luckel said most of them gained their first job experience with them at a young age and progressed to become managers.
"A couple have worked their way through from the back areas and worked their way up," he said.
Mr Luckel said McDonald's offered great training programs that could be counted towards a university degree.
"There are various courses that head office offers," he said. "I've been to at least five different courses during my career. Once you finish your store manager's course, it counts as two years of a four-year university degree in business. This means these courses are nationally accredited."
The variety of foods at McDonald's includes a great mix of new menu option and old favourites and Mr Luckel said it was the quality of food and fresh ingredients that kept customers coming back.
McDonald's Blacktown Mega Centre also has a McCafe that offers a great range of coffees and cakes.
