Riverstone is the place to be this Saturday.

Thousands are expected to flock to the town centre for the Riverstone Festival from 9am to 2pm.

Now in its 14th year, the festival began in 2000 and has only been washed out once.

"The first one was supposed be a one-off to give people something to celebrate in Riverstone," festival publicity officer Judith Lewis said.

"It was so successful that it has continued ever since.

"It's our day of the year for Riverstone."

The event is one of Blacktown Council's most successful community festivals and attracts crowds of up to 5000 people, festival committee president Phyllis McAlpine says.

"We may be a small town on the outskirts of Blacktown City but it's a very special day for us," she said.

One attraction not be missed is the 11am street parade, which will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Richmond rail line.

Festival organisers have tracked down former station staff who will ride in open cars.

About 60 groups are expected to participate and vie for the best in parade prize.

Other prizes include best walking group, car club and vintage car.

More than 100 stalls, live entertainment, rides, art and crafts, historical society displays and Devonshire teas will also keep crowds busy.

"We have lot of former residents coming back for the day," Mrs Lewis said.

"It's a good way for people to catch up. There's usually lots of people still around when it ends."

The festival is a combined churches and local community event supported by Riverstone Chamber of Commerce and Blacktown Council.

It will be in the surrounds of the Sam Lane Community Complex in Park Street.
