The taskforce dealing with sexual and other abuse in the military has referred 22 cases to NSW police possibly involving claims such as rape, assault and death threats.
The latest figures from the independent Defence Abuse Response Taskforce reveal that 63 cases have been referred to police nationally.
Retired judge Len Roberts-Smith, who chairs the taskforce, said the broad range of cases referred to police across the country included ''rape, physical assault, indecent assault, threat to kill, and stalking and intimidation with intent to cause fear''. He declined to comment on the specifics of cases referred to police in NSW.
Defence has confirmed it is examining eight cases related to rapes at the Australian Defence Force Academy in the late 1980s and 1990s in which the alleged perpetrators are still serving in the military.
These cases have also been referred by the abuse taskforce, which was set up by the former Labor government following the Skype scandal and the subsequent DLA Piper Review, which uncovered more than 1000 alleged abuse claims going back to the 1950s.
The taskforce has received about 2400 complaints and is just over halfway through assessing them.
A female military officer who says she was raped at the academy in the 1990s told the ABC's Four Corners program on Monday that she was tormented by having to serve alongside her attacker, who is also still in the military.
Chief of the Defence Force General David Hurley told the program this situation was ''totally unacceptable'' and vowed to ''deal with it'' if the woman contacted him.
''I will root this out if you give me the right information,'' he said. ''If there is anybody out there who was involved in ADFA in the '80s or '90s who has a complaint about a currently serving officer in relation to a sexual offence, call me.''
On Monday, Defence said it was looking at taking action over all eight of the cases in which alleged perpetrators were still serving. In some of those cases, the victims had not agreed to have their cases investigated - though Defence said it could still take action.
Another 15 cases have been referred to police in Victoria, 11 in Queensland, six in the ACT, four in the Northern Territory, two each in Western Australia and South Australia, and one in Tasmania.
Next week, the taskforce will table a special report in Parliament on the former West Australian naval base HMAS Leeuwin, at which boys as young as 13 suffered abuse in the 1950s and 1960s.
