Football NSW CEO Eddie Moore has praised the inception of the new western Sydney A-league team and the recent addition of coach Tony Popovic to the new franchise.
‘‘The game of football is vibrant, growing and full of opportunity,’’ he said.
‘‘Football is western Sydney is easliy the biggest participation sport and we’ve got the structure and opportunity for kids coming through the game.
‘‘Now the icing on the cake, to have their own team in the A-league means any junior who wants to pursue their football can actually reach the highest level of domestic competition literally in their own backyard.’’
‘‘What we have is a good choice of coach in Tony Popovic who is from the area, played and grew up here, and understands what football in Sydney’s west means.
‘‘He has proven himself as footballer and was good enough to make it all the way to the [English] Premier League.
‘‘He is a local boy who played for Sydney United and he understands the role of a coach and where he fits in.
‘‘He has a big job ahead of him to get the team ready around him by late June.’’
