Blacktown police have talked to the NSW Police Transport Command about the 24 explosive devices stolen from crew compartments on the Hornsby to Richmond CityRail train service on Tuesday, July 10.
A police spokesman said they hoped it would help them find out how a 15-year-old boy who lost his left hand in an explosion at Seven Hills last month got hold of a railway detonator.
Police said the theft this week had reportedly occurred as the train travelled between Blacktown and Richmond railway stations.
‘‘We also have some leads in connection with our case but are keeping them under wraps at this stage,’’ an officer said.
RailCorp staff discovered the theft and alerted police.
Officers from Flemington Local Area Command met the train at Olympic Park station just before 5pm.
Investigating officers have been provided with closed-circuit television footage as they try to identify those responsible for the theft.
CityRail staff place the detonators on tracks to warn railway workers a train is approaching.
Anyone with information that might assist investigators is urged to contact Auburn Police Station or Crime Stoppers, 1800 333 000.
