Brand new again

When your furniture is looking tired, out-of-date and needing some tender love and care, you can give it a new lease on life with reupholstery.

Reupholstery is the technique of repairing old furniture like recovering a chair, replacing the foam inside a seat or repairing the joints.

Owner of Undercover Upholstery Travis Giusa has been in the reupholstery industry for more than eights years.

He said his interest for breathing new life back into old furnishings was sparked from his love of antiques and wood.

"I've always liked working with my hands, particularly with wood," Mr Giusa said. "I've also loved antiques since I was young, so restoring old furniture and bringing it back to its original condition brings me great satisfaction."

At Undercover Upholstery, Mr Giusa can restore modern or antique furniture, large or small, within a matter of days. Bigger items could take longer, depending on the damage.

"It's very rare that a piece cannot be restored no matter how extensive the damage is, as we can do full restorations," Mr Giusa said.

In the past he has worked on restoring furniture at several clubs, various restaurants and he has also worked on many antiques — some more than 250 years old.

Reupholstering your old furniture could be a cheaper alternative to buying new furnishings.

Mr Giusa said since the Global Financial Crisis he has noticed a lot more people using upholsterers to fix their furniture.

"I guess people are wanting their money to go further so they opt to recover their existing lounges knowing they will get 10 to 20 years out of it instead of buying something that will need to be replaced in a few years," he said. "I also find that a lot of people are disappointed by what is on offer in retail stores."

Another benefit of upholstering old furniture Mr Giusa said was that it could reduce landfill waste as well as the number of trees that needed to be cut down to construct furniture pieces.

"Reupholstering old furniture is a way of recycling your old furniture and making it new again," he said.

"Reupholstery also gives you the opportunity to personalise your furniture using quality materials and perfected trade techniques that will give you a piece that will last a life time."
