IN BRIEF

Firies pass on skills

Learn about proper use of a fire extinguisher to fight a kitchen fire and see how clever canines assist in fire investigations at the Blacktown Fire Awareness Day (September 3) at Blacktown Showground.

Fire and Rescue NSW officers will provide information and will also simulate a kitchen fire.

Also learn how to use fire extinguishers and blankets and get a close look at fire trucks and equipment.

Free information bags and a sausage sizzle will also be available.

Family day care win

Plumpton-based carer Maria Bastian has been recognised as the western suburbs' regional winner in the excellence in family day care awards.

Ms Bastian, who is registered with Blacktown Family Day Care, is now in the running for the state and national educator of the year titles to be announced by Family Day Care Australia this year.

The awards recognise the high standards of family day care educators.

Family day care is the fastest growing childcare with an 11 per cent increase in usage in the last quarter of 2013.
