Jon Stanhope, former ACT Chief Minister, will be replaced as administrator of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands by another former MP.
Barry Haase, who held a federal Western Australian seat for the Liberal Party, was named on Monday as the new administrator.
He will begin his three year term in October, assistant minister for infrastructure Jamie Briggs said.
"Mr Haase has previously represented regional and remote areas across Western Australia as federal member for Kalgoorlie and for Durack, and has held several shadow Parliamentary Secretary positions," Mr Briggs said.
"I would like to thank outgoing Administrator Mr Jon Stanhope for his work as the Commonwealth representative on the Islands since 2012."
