A teenage girl was stabbed multiple times with a pocket knife during a fight with another female near Newcastle, police say.
The 17-year-old girl is in John Hunter Hospital with stab wounds to her chest, stomach, arms and hands following the incident in bushland at Kahibah, about 10 kilometres south-west of Newcastle, on Tuesday night.
An 18-year-old woman has been charged over the alleged attack.
Police said they were called to Flaggy Creek Reserve about 9pm on Tuesday after reports of a stabbing.
It's believed the two teenage girls were socialising with a group of people before getting into a fight.
Police will allege that during this fight, the older girl used a pocket knife to stab the younger teen multiple times.
The 18-year-old was arrested nearby and was taken to Charlestown Police Station, where she was charged with reckless wounding.
She was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Belmont Local Court on October 22.
