Eat/drink: Learn how to grow your own food and how to cook it

Parklands Food Fest

Parklands Food Fest

Parklands Food Fest will spice up this year's festival with a new theme.

Held on Sunday, October 26 at Western Sydney Parkland's Lizard Log picnic ground, this year's theme is Grow, Make, Eat.

Western Sydney Parklands director Suellen Fitzgerald said the theme for this year's festival came from listening to last year's attendees.

"Feedback told us that the most valuable aspects of last year's festival were watching the celebrity chefs, and also the hands-on workshops," she said.

"This year we have boosted these elements by securing one of Australia's most high-profile and most loved cooks — Julie Goodwin."

Ms Fitzgerald said Costa Georgiadis, presenter of ABC TV's Gardening Australia, would also teach visitors how to grow herbs and vegetables.

"Then he will be showing us how we can cook with them," she said.

"We will also be offering adults, as well as kids, the opportunity to have hands-on experiences with making food.

"This is an important element of the festival, as it complements and celebrates all the fresh produce made and grown within the Parklands as part of our urban farming program."

The Parklands Food Fest will have about 30 different food and beverage stalls, a wide range of interactive workshops/displays for adults and children, live entertainment, face painting and rides/amusements.

Highlights include:

■ Barter Chickens — chicken incubator, chicks for visitors to hold, information on raising chickens;

■ Dairy Road Alpacas — spinning fleece with live animals and hand-made garments;

■ Sydney Dietetics — kids' nutrition workshops;

■ Seed Harvest Spoon — growing workshops and native bee habitat building for children;

■ Healthy Harvest Kitchens — organic gardening, permaculture, worm farms, aquaponics;

■ UWS Love Food Hate Waste — how to reduce the food we waste, and

■ Pizza-making workshops for kids.

The Parklands Food Fest is on October 26, from 10am-4pm. Entry is free.
