The failure of Frankie Dettori to land a Melbourne Cup from 13 attempts regularly elicited a "come back when you're good enough" farewell, and even winning isn't guaranteed to command respect, as Frenchman Gerald Mosse discovered when he was referred to as "Gerald Moose".
