Police are investigating the possibility Sydney teenager Georgina Bartter took an ecstasy pill known as a "purple speaker" at a music festival just hours before she died on Saturday.
Fairfax Media understands a number of revellers who attended the Harbourlife festival in the Royal Botanic Gardens have told police they were aware of a pill being sold that was purple in colour and colloquially known as a "purple speaker".
Police are investigating whether the 19-year-old died of an adverse reaction to drugs after a friend reportedly said she had taken one-and-a-half ecstasy pills before her death.
Detectives will now begin to cross-check all the drugs they seized during an operation at the festival, which saw more than 50 people charged.
It will not be known what, if anything, the Longueville woman consumed before her death until toxicology test results come back.
But police said they needed to examine all possibilities.
Police have said festival attendees noticed the former Wenona student looking unwell just before 4.30pm.
Event medical staff and paramedics quickly found her and began treatment before she lost complete consciousness, police said.
She was then taken to St Vincent's Hospital at Darlinghurst, where she died.
NSW Police drug squad commander, Detective Superintendent Tony Cooke, said it did not matter what colour or name a drug was given.
"Quite simply, it doesn't matter what colour or name the drug has been given, the user has absolutely no idea what it contains. Furthermore, they have absolutely no idea how their body may react to the drug," Superintendent Cooke said.
He also wanted to stress there was no such thing as a "recreational" or "party" drug.
"MDMA is no different. It is manufactured by money-hungry criminals who are only interested in boosting their black market businesses. They will cut their product with anything they can find in order to increase their yield," he said.
Irish tourist Owen Mullins saw Ms Bartter just before she lost consciousness.
"I walked past this girl and noticed that she was not looking well, I stopped and asked if she was OK. She didn't respond," he said.
"I sat next to her and watched for about 30 seconds to one minute and returned to tell her friend that she needed help.
"She agreed and asked for a paramedic so I ran and got one."
Ms Bartter was described by her former headmistress, Briony Scott, as a "gorgeous, bright young woman".
