A great white shark found in Bondi Beach nets on Saturday measured more than 2 metres - the second large shark caught in nets off the famous beach in three days.
The 2.15m male shark was found dead on Saturday Morning, said a spokeswoman for the NSW Department of Primary Industries.
The great white was first spotted tangled in the mesh by spear fisherman Ian Puckridge on Friday morning.
"There has not been a single fatal shark attack on a netted Sydney beach since the nets were introduced in 1937," the spokeswoman said.
The Department of Primary Industries hired specialist contractors to remove the animal's body early on Saturday morning. They also released a 1.1 metre stringray that was found alive and trapped in the net.
The nets do not stretch the length of the entire beach but are designed to stop sharks establishing territories at popular swimming destinations.
They are checked every 72 hours and do occasionally trap marine animals such as seals and turtles. A new device has been introduced this year to emit high frequency noises to keep dolphins away from the nets.
The spokeswoman described the shark meshing program as a highly successful initiative.
This year, West Australian authorities caught 172 sharks and shot 68 but has indicated it will not continue to cull this summer.
Any animal found alive is released back into the ocean. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature classifies the great white as a vulnerable species facing a high risk of extinction.
