A Bathurst father has drowned while saving the life of his five-year-old daughter, after their kayak capsized.
Police were called to Chifley Dam at about 7.30pm after the 36-year-old father and his daughter fell from a kayak without life jackets.
They were told the father managed to place the girl onto another kayak before disappearing below water.
His body was found just before 9pm a short distance from where the accident occurred.
Inspector Andrew Spliet from the Chifley Local Area Command in Bathurst said the man was on an outing with a large group of family and friends, including his wife.
Chifley Dam, just out of Bathurst, is a popular recreation area for locals.
Police are investigating the incident and will prepare a brief for the Coroner.
