Mystery surrounds how more than 60 guinea pigs, most of them dead, ended up on the side of a Riverstone road on Saturday morning.
The RSPCA is investigating the incident after a passing truck driver and jogger alerted authorities to the grim discovery on the corner of Hamilton and Victoria Streets on Saturday morning.
‘‘Around 55 dead guinea pigs were spread out on the side of the road which had been killed or dumped there,’’ a RSPCA spokeswoman told Fairfax Media.
‘‘There were also six live guinea pigs, some of them in a heap of wood shavings with food bowls. One of the informants managed to catch one and take it to the vet.’’
The surviving guinea pigs are currently being cared for by the RSPCA.
The spokeswoman described the incident as bizarre and horrendous.
‘‘At this stage we’re still waiting for the autopsy results but there was significant amount of blood near their heads and ears,’’ she said.
‘‘We call on any witness or neighbours who know anything about it to get in touch.’’
