Sydney will remember the victims of the Lindt cafe siege, Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson, when more than an expected 1.6 million people gather around Sydney Harbour for New Year's Eve.
Floral mementoes with the words "Sydney remembers" will be beamed on the Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons throughout the evening before and after scheduled fireworks displays.
The pair died early on December 16 when police stormed the Lindt cafe where lone gunman Man Haron Monis had held 18 people hostage for 17 hours since before lunch the previous day.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore announced on Wednesday morning that the council would donate $10,000 to Beyond Blue to commemorate Tori Johnson and also to the Katrina Dawson Foundation focusing attention on the education of women.
"We've been a city in mourning ... the people of Sydney responded in a way that reflected who we are - we are a multicultural inclusive, welcoming community," she said.
"The small tribute tonight is to say Sydney remembers ... It is in memory of the two young and talented people we lost because of that siege and we also remember the trauma that the hostages experience and the bravery of the police."
