Bali nine death row inmate Andrew Chan once offered the gift of a new life – a liver transplant for a visiting friend.
Sydney pastor Mal Feebrey said he was dying from liver disease when Chan looked him in the eyes and said "have mine" inside Bali's Kerobokan prison in 2010.
"I think what really knocked me about was that I looked him in the eye, and he was fair dinkum," Mr Feebrey said.
"It really touched me. Here I am waiting for a donor, I'm dying in front of my wife and kids and here he is going 'my liver's ok, you can have mine'."
Mr Feebrey has supported Chan, Matthew Norman and other members of the Bali nine since their arrest in 2005, made regular visits to Bali and stayed in constant phone contact.
After a "touch and go" four years, Mr Feebrey received a liver transplant from another donor but says he will never forget the gift of life Chan once offered him.
The Bali nine "ringleader" got his blood tested and had made inquires with doctors to see whether organ donation was possible.
"He was sort of like, if they want to kill me, then you can have my liver. It wasn't a passing-the-time comment, he wanted to make it happen. If he could have pulled it off he would have."
Mr Feebrey has not shared his intimate story previously, but said he wanted everyone to know what an incredible person Chan was as he faced his planned execution along with fellow inmate Myuran Sukumaran.
The Sydney-based pastor was with Chan in January when he learned his clemency plea had been rejected by President Joko Widodo.
He said Chan hugged his fiancee Feby and promptly walked off to the jail's clinic to visit a prisoner who had suffered a stroke.
"It was a bit surreal. Andrew took it on the chin and with courage and then he just walked off to go to the clinic to go and see this guy," Mr Feebrey said.
The last time he had contact with Chan was just hours before the prisoner was moved to the island where he is likely to be executed.
He said that he last spoke to him three Sundays ago "saying 'I love you man'" and Chan replied "I love you too".
Chan and Sukumaran are hugely popular with their fellow inmates and have gone to extraordinary efforts to train, counsel and financially support hundreds of Indonesian prisoners.
Both men have counselled prisoners to get off drugs and raised money to help with parole appeals and medical procedures for inmates and their families.
Chan leads religious services, organises cooking classes and was instrumental in setting up first aid courses in the prison.
Mr Feebrey works in drug and alcohol rehabilitation with a group called ONE80TC in Sydney. He said the death of Chan and Sukumaran would be a "tragedy".
"Andrew is the idyllic, dream guy to mentor and rehabilitate and a great seed like him – they want to put to death?"
On the news of Chan's recent engagement to Feby, his Indonesian girlfriend of three years, Mr Feebrey said it had been a well kept secret among a close circle of friends.
"They had such intimacy in public. It was just the fact that they would sit together and hold hands. It was sincere, it was heart warming – it kept him going."
