SEVEN Quakers Hill High School students have been named the top problem solvers in social sciences in Western Sydney.
They won the regional Tournament of Minds competition at UWS Kingswood Campus last week and will represent the region in the state competition on September 9.
They are team captain, Rhyannah Torrance, Daniel Scott, Rose Lewis and Meagan Warner from year 9, Georgia Blundell and Bethany O'Malley from year 7 and Lara Sharpe from year 10.
The Tournament of Minds challenged teams of primary and secondary school students to solve problems from one of the disciplines: social sciences, language, literature, maths, engineering and applied technology.
It aims to enhance the potential of youth by developing enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively in a competitive environment.
The team under the supervision of teacher Karen Critchley, had six weeks to work on a given problem, including creating a script and props, which they then performed before a panel of judges.
Ms Critchley said the students had to solve a problem and then present their response in a dramatic form.
"They are presented with a different scenario, have a minute to think about it and immediately provide their ideas," she said.
"They are not only smart students but also treat each other and the staff with respect."
