With handy inspiration-gathering websites like Pintrest anyone can be a craft expert — or at least an enthusiast.
But you needn't be an ace with the hot glue gun to warm Mum's heart this coming Mother's Day (yes, it's next month!).
Here are easy DIY Mother's Day gift ideas that are achievable even with limited time and supplies.
■ You can't go past pancakes in bed to keep Mum happy on her day. For the batter, mix a cup of self-raising flour with a tablespoon of sugar then add a whisked egg and 3/4 cup of milk. Cook in a hot pan or grill and serve with fresh fruit and honey, maple syrup or jam and cream.
■ Make a home spa by lighting candles, putting on relaxing music and giving Mum a hand scrub and massage. Beauty blog The Beauty Department (thebeautydepartment.com) suggests mixing 1/4 cup of coarse sugar, two tablespoons of coconut oil, the juice of half a lemon and a few drops of Argan, lavender or olive oil. Rub on hands for two minutes, rinse with warm water (no soap) and pat dry, leaving a thin layer of moisturising oils on the skin. Voilà: soft hands and feet in a flash.
■ With a little creativity anyone can turn a few inexpensive supplies into a pretty card. Gather coloured cardboard, scissors, EVA, glitter, glue and maybe even a picture and let your imagination run wild to say "we love you Mum".
■ Simplicity goes a long way so don't underestimate the power of a bunch of flowers. Dads can take the kids out for a walk and pick flowers found along the way. Wrap them with a pretty ribbon and watch Mum's heart melt right on the spot.
