If you spot a few movie crews around town from June, you could find yourself on the set of a new sci-fi film to be shot on the streets of Perth.
Titled OtherLife, the film will be about a woman who creates a drug which can create virtual realities within a user's mind. When the dangers of the technology become apparent, she races to put a stop to it before it is unleashed on the public.
The screenplay is based on the novel Solitaire by Kelley Eskridge.
Perth-raised director Ben C. Lucas will lead the project, having shot his feature film debut Wasted On the Young in his hometown.
That film, which opened to mixed reviews, showcased locations in City Beach, Joondalup and included sweeping views of Perth beaches.
Culture and Arts minister John Day said OtherLife would be the third film shot in Western Australia this year using ScreenWest funding and would "provide work for about 30 people".
"It is encouraging to see the state being recognised as a diverse place to shoot with professional local crews," he said.
"We are attracting interstate producers here, which is increasing our profile."
Sydney-based production company See Pictures has the film listed "in production" on its website, with local production house WMBC and Californian company Cherry Road Films also attached to the project.
Blue Dog, the prequel to successful 2011 film Red Dog, and an adaptation of Craig Silvey's novel Jasper Jones are the other two ScreenWest funded films currently in production in Western Australia.
