Regional Australia is set for improved mobile broadband services following the federal government's announcement on Friday that additional spectrum will be made available to support mobile broadband services.
The move will allow mobile phone users to access better and faster internet data use on their devices, using 4G technology.
The new deal for regional Australia was announced in a statement by Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull and following a recommendation Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
The improved services will come about through the re-allocation the regional 1800 MHz band which is currently used for fixed point-to-point communications in non-metropolitan areas.
In capital cities, the 1800 spectrum band is already used for mobile broadband services as it provides the highly desirable for mobile broadband use known internationally for Long Term Evolution (LTE), including 4G services.
ACMA is planning to hold an auction for the spectrum in November 2015.
The changes will come into the effect gradually over the next two years as the spectrum becomes vacant with the majority of the existing spectrum being vacated by June 2017.
