Once a year, the universe’s greatest heroes and villains get together for a weekend.
It wouldn’t be unusual to see Khaleesi break bread with Doctor Who, or Lex Luthor getting cosy with Elsa.
This isn't a Marvel-DC Comics cross-over special, but the Supanova Pop Culture Expo; and this year western Sydney has gone all-out with their cosplay outfits.
Enter Darrell Johnson. When he isn't dressed as the caped crusader and inflicting permanent, but non-fatal injuries on criminals, he runs The Saarlac Pit.
As well being the name of an intergalactic omnivore with an appetite for bounty hunters, it is a cosplay store in Parramatta which has helped hundreds of people prepare for Supanova next week.
“Some of the costumes, such as War Machine and Ironman – with moving parts and SFX – can cost up to $1400,” Mr Johnson said.
“The commissions we get, can take anywhere from a few hours to a few months to put together.”
Some of the outfits are often unwieldy, impractical and won’t actually offer much in terms of protection.
But that’s all part of the fun, said Jordan Springs resident, Brad Towner who towered over people in his 8-foot Transformers outfit.
“There’s a common saying: if you’re comfortable, you’re doing cosplay wrong,” Mr Towner said while barely maintaining balancing.
The event draws up to 70,000 people are year, offering meet-and-greets with celebrities, entertainment, fan-clubs and costumes of all kinds.
“You really feel connected to a community,” Dan Axiak, a Marsden Park resident dressed as the trickster-god Loki, said.
The Sun spoke with some of the international guests who are drawing tens of thousands of adoring fans to the event.
“I always look forward to going to Australia,” Billy West, famous for playing Fry in Futurama, said.
He and Adam Baldwin, of Firefly fame, said it was the fans who kept their shows alive even after they respectively ended or were cancelled.
“The fans are the reasons are we come to events, the Aussies are such a beautiful group of people,” Baldwin said.
Supanova will be held at Sydney Olympic Park between June 19-21. Other guests include Nancy Cartwright, Nathan Fillion and Jason Isaacs.
