The public image of banks has copped a battering lately - whether it's through financial planning scandals, or poor behaviour such as market-rigging by bankers overseas.

But despite all the brand damage, it seems to be having little impact on how customers feel about their bank.
Roy Morgan figures show consumer satisfaction with the country's banks is at a 20-year high.
Some 81.5 per cent of customers of the big four - Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, ANZ and National Australia Bank - are fairly or very satisfied with the job their bank is doing, survey figures show. For non-major banks the measure is even higher at 86.1 per cent.
The big four's satisfaction rating has increased from less than 70 per cent 10 years ago, and just 60 per cent in 2001.
Aside from the run of financial advice scandals, the improvement has also come amid persistent public pressure over banks' bumper profits and unpopular fees and charges.
So, what may have driven the turnaround?
One factor is almost certainly the very low level of interest rates.
Although nearly two thirds of households don't have a mortgage, the size of many borrowers' home loans means mortgage rates are always a sensitive issue.
Mortgage customers are a lot happier about their banks in this era of very cheap debt, though they still tend to be less satisfied than people who don't have a home loan.
Technology is also making banking less painful. The rise of online and mobile banking has all but removed the hassle of lining up at branches for many consumers.
Banks also appear to have learnt a few lessons about cutting branches, after a wave of closures in the 1990s sparked a community backlash.
Despite the rapid growth in digital banking, the total number of bank, building society or credit union branches declined by a modest 1 per cent, or 52 in 2013-14, latest official figures show.
There are still plenty of customers who are less than happy with their bank, of course.
According to Roy Morgan, people between 35 and 59 tend to be the least satisfied. That may be because this is often the stage of life when people need to go through more complex processes like applying for a home loan or getting their superannuation in order.
Meanwhile, it is the youngest and oldest customers of banks who are happiest with their banks.
During the past five years, people older than 70 and those aged between 14 and 21 were significantly more satisfied with their bank than the rest.
These oldest and youngest age groups are the least likely to hold a mortgage, of course, so that's probably one reason why they tend to be more positive.
