Push for causeway funds

THE death of a man at the flooded Stoney Creek Road causeway last year has put pressure on Blacktown and Penrith councils to find a solution for a new road.

Long-time campaigner, Shanes Park resident Lisa Xuereb, has proposed a ridge-to-ridge structure that wouldn't flood, is cost effective and would save lives.

She had a meeting with Londonderry MP Bart Bassett a fortnight ago to discuss her proposal.

He vowed to lobby for state and federal funding if the councils could redesign that part of Stoney Creek Road.

Mrs Xuereb said it didn't take much rain for the causeway to go under, adding an extra 20 minutes' travel through the area.

Owen "OJ" Fitzpatrick died in floodwaters when authorities didn't close the gates on the causeway. Warnings sings and lights were installed afterwards.

"What happened to that young man last year could happen to anyone," Mrs Xuereb said.

A new road over the causeway would cost at least $30 million, Penrith Council says.

"There is no funding identified to build it," a council spokesman said.

Blacktown councillor Jackie Donaldson got a similar response from her council.

The Penrith Council spokesman said $340,000 was received to make the road safer.

He said work to improve visibility, signage and railings would be completed mid-2013.
