A prisoner accused of making a violent and daring escape from the Downing Centre court complex in Sydney last week has been recaptured after police forced their way into a unit in Sydney's inner south on Monday morning.
Ali Chahine, 33, had been on the run since Wednesday afternoon last week, when he allegedly jumped from the dock of the Downing Centre District Court, ran out of the complex and escaped on a bus heading towards Central Station.
Police said on Monday morning they had received information that he was hiding in a unit on Newton Street in Alexandria.
Officers from the Redfern Local Area Command and the Operation Support Group surrounded the unit complex about 7am on Monday, and called on Mr Chahine to surrender.
When he allegedly refused, officers forced their way into the unit and arrested him.
He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital, where police said he was being treated for a pre-existing medical condition.
He is expected to be released into police custody later on Monday. No charges have been laid.
Mr Chahine had appeared in court on Wednesday last week for allegedly breaching his bail conditions on drug supply charges.
When his bail was refused, he allegedly jumped out of the dock and ran from the room without any shoes on.
He then allegedly ran through a fire exit on to Castlereagh Street and got on a bus, before disembarking outside Central Station near Belmore Park, where he disappeared.
Two Corrective Services guards, a male and female, were badly assaulted during the escape.
