A torn cardboard box and a twisted metal plate could be the key to help solve the suspected murder of a 58-year-old greyhound trainer who police say was blown up in a deliberate act in the NSW central tablelands earlier this year.
John Burrows had walked the short distance from his home in Portland to his mother's garage, where he parked his car, on the morning of July 24 when he is believed to have picked up what appeared to be a box left near the roller door.
The item was in fact a sophisticated bomb that detonated in Mr Burrows' face and caused a huge explosion that was heard as far as five kilometres away. Mr Burrows was killed instantly, and the windows of surrounding homes were shattered.
Detectives believed that Mr Burrows, a father of three who was a well-known greyhound trainer in Portland, was deliberately targeted by someone who was familiar with his morning routine.
Detective Inspector Luke Rankin, the crime manager at the Chifley Local Area Command, said officers had retrieved the remnants of the bomb from the explosion scene which could help identify Mr Burrows' killer.
In particular, they are seeking information about a piece of cardboard box that was torn and burnt, and which detectives believe was used to conceal the bomb outside the garage.
"We believe the box for a Hills brand sprayer was used to cover or hide the improvised explosive device from sight," Detective Inspector Rankin said.
"These particular Hills brand 16-litre knapsack sprayers were sold in Australia from 2012 to 2014 then updated to a newer model.
"Police are seeking information from anyone that may have been in possession of a cardboard box that originally contained this sprayer unit, and has since discarded it or given it away."
Police at the blast scene also recovered a cast metal plate, which is believed to have formed part of the bomb. Detectives believe a second similar plate could have been used and was possibly propelled from the site during the explosion. Police would like to hear from anyone who has seen or found a similar plate.
They are also appealing for anyone in the Portland area who had an amount of black powder stolen or go missing from their property to come forward.
Police investigations have revealed the black powder was used in the production of the bomb; however its possession in NSW is restricted to only those who hold an appropriate firearms licence.
"If you have any information about why Mr Burrows was targeted, or can assist with information about the sprayer box, the cast metal plate or the black powder, then I implore you to come forward," Detective Inspector Rankin said.
