A designer educated in Burnie has the whole of space and time to work with in her latest project for one of the small screen’s most watched programs.
Hayley Nebauer went to school at Marist Regional College, but is now working as costume designer for the tenth series of the cult hit Doctor Who.
It is one of the biggest jobs in her 15-year career as a costume designer, setting out after graduating in 1999 from Marist.
After completing a fashion degree at RMIT in Melbourne in 2003 she headed to London in 2005 for one four month project, and is still working there 11 years later.
In that time she has worked in England, Wales, the Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, Scotland, France, Northern Ireland, Greece and Brazil, and on titles including Thor: The Dark World, Fast and Furious 6, and Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
“Doctor Who is certainly something I am very excited about and looking forward to, it's one of those dream projects for a costume designer as you have all of time and space to play with and inspire your work - it just depends on where the stories take you,” Ms Nebauer said.
“Following on from doing series three of The Musketeers for BBC, I feel very lucky to be able to undertake the creative challenges that BBC shows of this size offer.
“I’ve always been a huge genre fan of science fiction in particular; I remember when the old Doctor Who shows were on TV (in black and white) after school in the 80s, I grew up watching things like Star Trek: The Next Generation and was also really influenced by big sci-fi films like 5th Element, so to be able to take on Doctor Who is something I am so very, very thrilled about.”
She says it took a lot of hard work to get where she is today in the industry, and also to get her start which began with school musicals and the Burnie Musical Society.
“I wasn't one of those kids in school who was a naturally gifted artist, so had to really work at my drawing skills both in and out of school, I was lucky to have a very encouraging art teacher, David Hawley at Marist who helped me prepare my final year work for uni applications.
“My mum was always very supportive and helped me by organising drawing lessons with an artist she knew and sewing lessons with a local lady, so I could learn about garment construction outside of school.”
Musketeers will air later this year and Doctor Who in early 2017.
